Shopify WhatsApp integration: what to connect, what to automate, and what it costs per order
Connecting Shopify to WhatsApp is three separate jobs: getting order data next to the chat, letting store events send messages, and selling inside the conversation. Here is what each involves, the order to do them in, and a worked cost per order at Meta's India rates.
The short version
- A Shopify WhatsApp integration has three parts: orders shown beside the chat, store events that send messages, and products or payment links sent from the conversation.
- You need a number on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API). The free Business app can't send automated order updates from Shopify.
- Four order updates cost about 46 paise per order at Meta's India utility rate of ₹0.115. Cart reminders are marketing at ₹0.8631 each and usually make up most of the bill.
- Automate order updates first, cart recovery second, and offers last. Each step needs its own opt-in wording.
- Team replies are free only for the first 1,000 per number each month, then ₹0.115 each.
Pooja Rathore sells block-print bed linen from Jaipur through a Shopify store. Five people, about 900 orders a month, and one phone at the packing table that everyone grabs when it buzzes. “Where is my order” arrives on that phone forty times a day. Someone opens Shopify on the laptop, searches the name, reads out the tracking number and types it back.
When she searched for a Shopify WhatsApp integration, she found the phrase covers three different jobs. They need different permissions, cost different amounts, and are worth doing in a particular order.
What “integration” actually covers
- Order data beside the chat. When a customer messages, whoever replies can see that customer’s Shopify orders without opening a second tab.
- Store events that send messages. An order is placed, paid, shipped or left unfinished, and a WhatsApp message goes out without anyone typing it.
- Selling inside the conversation. The person replying sends a product or a payment link from the store into the chat.
A chat button on your storefront is a fourth thing people call integration. It isn’t one. It’s a link that opens WhatsApp, it takes ten minutes, and our guide to adding WhatsApp to a website covers it. It’s still worth having on day one.
You need the WhatsApp API, and the app won’t do
The free WhatsApp Business app has no way for Shopify to send a message through it. Automated order updates need a number on the WhatsApp Business Platform, which most people call the WhatsApp API. Our WhatsApp Business API guide explains how to get one.
Three things follow from that, and all of them catch new stores out:
- Messages you start must use a template Meta has approved. Each delivered template is billed by category.
- A new account can message 250 different people in a rolling 24 hours outside open chats. That rises to 2,000 after business verification or one of Meta’s other scaling paths. Order updates for 30 orders a day fit easily. A sale announcement to 6,000 past buyers on day three doesn’t. See messaging limits.
- You connect through a tool that speaks to both Shopify and Meta, or you build it yourself.
WhatsApp API and Shopify: three ways to connect them
A WhatsApp inbox tool with a Shopify connection
You sign in to Shopify from the tool, approve the permissions it asks for, and it reads orders and listens for store events. This suits most stores under a few thousand orders a month. Read the permission screen before you approve: reading orders and products is expected, and anything that writes to your store deserves a question.
Build it yourself
Shopify can notify your own server when an order is created, paid or fulfilled (these notifications are called webhooks), and your server calls Meta’s Cloud API to send the template. You control everything and you maintain everything, including retries, opt-outs and template changes. This makes sense if you already have a developer on the payroll and unusual flows.
Nothing automated yet
A store doing 60 orders a month can paste tracking numbers by hand from the Business app and lose nothing. If that’s you, add the chat button, collect opt-ins properly, and come back when the packing-table phone becomes a problem.
What to automate, in order
First: order updates
Confirmed, shipped, out for delivery, delivered. These cut the “where is my order” messages, and Meta bills them as utility because they’re about the customer’s own order with nothing promotional in them. Add a cash-on-delivery confirmation if a large share of your orders is COD.
Keep offers out of them. One “use code THANKS10 on your next order” line makes the whole template marketing, at seven and a half times the price. The exact wording for each update, with the category Meta is likely to give it, is in our Shopify WhatsApp templates set.
One more decision: Shopify already emails an order confirmation. Decide whether WhatsApp replaces the email for customers who opted in or arrives alongside it. Alongside is fine for the confirmation. For “out for delivery”, pick one.
Second: cart recovery
Shopify’s help centre treats an order as abandoned when the shopper has entered their email at the payment step and left it unfinished for more than ten minutes. That event can start a WhatsApp reminder.
Meta’s category rules name cart reminders as marketing “even if requested by users”, so each delivered one costs ₹0.8631 to an Indian number, and it can only go to shoppers who opted in to offers. Timing, the follow-up rule and how to measure what a reminder really recovers are in the abandoned cart playbook. We won’t repeat them here, except for the one rule that matters most: cancel the reminder if the shopper buys first.
Third: Shopify WhatsApp marketing
Back-in-stock alerts, reorder nudges, a festive sale. This is where most stores want to start, and it should come last. By the time you send an offer, customers have already had three or four useful order updates from the same number, and they recognise it.
Build the audience from Shopify data: bought a king-size set in the last 90 days, ordered twice, opted in to offers. WhatsApp caps how many marketing messages each person receives from all businesses combined, so a smaller list of people who want the message gets delivered more reliably than the whole customer export. The wider method is in our WhatsApp marketing guide.
The part automation can’t do: the conversation
A shopper replies to “out for delivery” with “can you deliver after 6?” Another asks whether the double bedsheet fits a 72 by 78 inch mattress. These chats decide whether WhatsApp for Shopify earns its keep, and they’re where order data beside the chat pays off.
- Ishita Banerjee: hi my order shows shipped since 3 days. when will it come 11:02 am
- Order card beside the chat: shipped Tuesday, courier in transit, Howrah
- Dhaaga Home: Hi Ishita, Farida here. It reached the Howrah hub this morning and should be with you tomorrow. I'll message if that changes. 11:04 am
- Ishita Banerjee: ok. also do you have the same print in pillow covers 11:05 am
- Dhaaga Home: Yes, a set of two. Sending it now with a payment link in case you want it. 11:06 am
- Product card and payment link sent from the store
What it costs per order
Meta charges per delivered template, by category. For Indian numbers the rates on the card effective 1 July 2026, unchanged on 1 October, are ₹0.115 for utility and ₹0.8631 for marketing, before GST. Since 1 October 2026 two more things are billed: utility templates sent while a chat is open, and free-form replies after the first 1,000 per number each month, at ₹0.115 each. The full breakdown is in WhatsApp pricing from October 2026.
Here is Pooja’s month, with made-up but plausible volumes:
| Message | Count | Rate | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four order updates on each of 900 orders | 3,600 | ₹0.115 | ₹414.00 |
| COD confirmation on 360 orders | 360 | ₹0.115 | ₹41.40 |
| Cart reminders delivered | 1,100 | ₹0.8631 | ₹949.41 |
| Team replies beyond the 1,000 free (1,400 sent) | 400 | ₹0.115 | ₹46.00 |
| Total, before GST | ₹1,450.81 |
Divide by 900 orders and Meta’s charges come to about ₹1.61 an order.
The split matters more than the total. The order updates alone are 46 paise for a prepaid order and 57.5 paise for a COD one. The cart reminders are a fifth of the messages and about 65% of the bill, and they’re the only line that should be judged on what it earns. If those 1,100 reminders bring back 35 orders that wouldn’t have come otherwise, each recovered order cost about ₹27. You only know the 35 if you hold back a group of carts that get no reminder.
Then add the tool. Whatever you use has a monthly fee, and it’s usually bigger than the Meta charges at this size. A ₹2,499 plan across 900 orders is ₹2.78 an order, which brings the total to roughly ₹4.39 before GST. Ask any provider whether they add a markup to Meta’s rates on top of the subscription; our list of questions for a WhatsApp API provider has the rest.
Compare that with one returned COD parcel. Forward and return shipping on a single bedsheet set costs Pooja far more than a year of confirmations to that customer.
WhatsApp ecommerce mistakes we see most
- Treating a phone number at the payment step as permission. It isn’t. Meta requires an opt-in that names your business, and order updates and offers should be separate ticks. Wording for the order page is in our opt-in guide.
- Sending every Shopify event. Order placed, payment captured, label printed, picked up, in transit, at hub: six messages before the parcel has left the state. Four per order is plenty.
- Automating messages and leaving replies to one phone. Every update invites a reply. If nobody is assigned to answer, you’ve paid to start conversations you then ignore. A shared inbox fixes that before the automation goes live, not after.
- Testing templates on live customers. Place a real order to your own number first, for both prepaid and COD.
If a term here is new, the WhatsApp Business glossary has plain definitions.
A sensible first fortnight
Week one: connect the store, put the opt-in ticks on the order page, submit the four order-update templates and the COD confirmation, and route replies to named people. Week two: switch on updates, watch reply volume for a few days, then submit one cart reminder and start it with a held-back group.
Leave offers until you’ve seen a month of numbers. Then work out your own cost per order from your own volumes, using the table above with your figures in it.
Common questions
How do I connect Shopify to WhatsApp?
You need a number on the WhatsApp Business Platform, which most people call the WhatsApp API, because the free Business app can't send automated order updates from Shopify. Then either use a WhatsApp inbox tool with a Shopify connection, or build it yourself with Shopify webhooks and Meta's Cloud API.
What does WhatsApp cost per Shopify order in India?
Four order updates cost about 46 paise per order at Meta's India utility rate of ₹0.115 per delivered message, before GST. In a worked example of 900 orders with cart reminders and team replies, Meta's charges came to about ₹1.61 an order. The tool's monthly fee is on top.
Which Shopify WhatsApp messages should I automate first?
Automate order updates first: confirmed, shipped, out for delivery and delivered, which Meta bills as utility. Add cart recovery second and offers last. Cart reminders are marketing at ₹0.8631 each to an Indian number, and each step needs its own opt-in wording.
Is an abandoned cart message on WhatsApp marketing or utility?
Marketing. Meta's category rules name cart reminders as marketing 'even if requested by users', so each delivered one costs ₹0.8631 to an Indian number, before GST, and it can only go to shoppers who opted in to offers. Cancel the reminder if the shopper buys first.
