Shopify abandoned cart on WhatsApp: timing, template and cost
A cart reminder on WhatsApp lands where your shoppers spend their day. Meta bills it as marketing even if the shopper asked for it, so every reminder has to earn its 86 paise.
The short version
- Meta classes cart reminders as marketing, even when the shopper asked for them. To an Indian number each one costs ₹0.8631 when delivered, before GST.
- Only message shoppers who ticked a WhatsApp opt-in that names your brand. Put the checkbox next to the phone number field and leave it unticked.
- Send one reminder 30 to 60 minutes after the cart is left, and at most one follow-up. Cancel it if the shopper buys first.
- Hold back a small group of carts you don't remind. Without it you can't tell what a reminder recovers, or what each recovered order costs.
Baymard Institute averages 50 studies of online cart abandonment and puts the rate at about 70% (page updated September 2025). Most of those shoppers were only browsing. Some got a phone call halfway through, or the payment page timed out, or they had a sizing question nobody answered. A short WhatsApp message wins a share of those back.
It also costs money every time, and it arrives in the same app as the shopper’s family group. Send it badly and people block you. This playbook is for Indian D2C brands on Shopify that want the orders without the blocks.
What Meta’s rules decide for you
Meta’s template rules name cart reminders as marketing, “even if requested by users”. You can’t send them as cheaper utility messages. Submit one as utility and Meta will approve it as marketing anyway. How Meta decides a message’s category has the details.
So every delivered reminder to a +91 number costs ₹0.8631, before GST, on Meta’s India rate card effective 1 July 2026 (unchanged on 1 October). A reminder that isn’t delivered costs nothing. One that’s delivered and ignored costs the full amount.
WhatsApp also caps how many marketing messages each person receives from all businesses combined, and the cap moves with how that person reads them. A held-back reminder fails with error 131049. Meta asks you to wait at least 24 hours before trying that shopper again, and repeated retries can block further attempts for up to a day.
There’s one exception worth knowing. If the shopper first reached you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you replied in time, a free window of up to 7 days is open, and a reminder sent inside it costs nothing.
Step 1: Put the opt-in on the order form
Place the checkbox right under the phone number field, where the shopper is already typing. Don’t pre-tick it. Store the date and the exact wording against the contact, so you can show later when and how someone agreed.
Step 2: Wait 30 minutes to an hour
Too soon feels like being watched: the shopper may still be on your site. Too late and they’ve bought elsewhere or forgotten why they wanted it. We’d start at 30 minutes, then test an hour against it once you have a few weeks of numbers.
Whatever the delay, cancel the reminder if the order comes in first. “You left something behind!” arriving ten minutes after the order confirmation makes a brand look like it doesn’t know its own customers.
Step 3: Send one clear reminder
Show the product, keep it short, and add two buttons: one to finish the order, one to ask a question. The second button earns more than it looks like it should. A lot of carts are left over a question about size, delivery date or cash on delivery, and a shopper who asks is still interested.
- Cart left at 8:05 pm · reminder sent 30 minutes later
- Aarna Boutique: Template · marketing Hi Priya, your Chanderi kurta in size M is still in your bag. We've kept it for you until tomorrow night. 8:35 pm
- Complete my order
- I have a question
- Priya Sharma: I have a question 8:41 pm
- Priya Sharma: Will it reach Nagpur by Saturday? Need it for a function 8:41 pm
- Handed to the support team
- Aarna Boutique: Hi Priya, Sneha here. Orders placed tonight reach Nagpur by Friday. Sending you the payment link for your bag now. 8:44 pm
Once the shopper replies, a 24-hour customer service window opens and your team can answer in ordinary messages. Since 1 October those replies aren’t free either: each number gets 1,000 a month, then ₹0.115 each. It’s small money, but answer in one message, not four.
Step 4: One follow-up, then stop
If the first reminder was read and ignored, send at most one more, about a day later. Make it different. Answer the common objection (returns, delivery date, cash on delivery) instead of repeating “you forgot something”.
If the first reminder wasn’t delivered, don’t retry inside 24 hours. After two messages with no response, stop. You’ll lose the odd order that a third message would have caught. You’ll keep your number’s standing and fewer people will block you.
| Reminder 1 | Reminder 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| When | 30 to 60 minutes after the cart is left | About 24 hours later, only if 1 was read and not acted on |
| Says | What’s in the bag, how long you’ll hold it | One reason to buy: returns, delivery date, payment options |
| Buttons | Complete my order · I have a question | Complete my order · Talk to us |
| Cost per delivered message (India) | ₹0.8631 | ₹0.8631 |
Step 5: Get questions to a person fast
When a shopper taps “I have a question”, the chat should land in a shared inbox where someone picks it up in minutes, with the cart and past orders next to the conversation. That’s where a reminder turns into a sale.
What a recovered order costs
This is the sum most brands never do. A worked example, with made-up but plausible numbers:
- 1,000 reminders delivered in a month × ₹0.8631 = ₹863.
- Compared with the held-back group, those carts produced 30 more orders.
- ₹863 ÷ 30 = about ₹29 per recovered order, before GST.
If your average order is ₹1,400, that’s a good trade. If it’s ₹250, and the reminder mostly recovers orders that would have come anyway, it may not be. You only know which by keeping the held-back group. We’d hold back around one cart in ten; with a few thousand abandoned carts a month, that’s enough to see a difference within a few weeks.
What to watch weekly
- Delivered, read and tapped, per send time and per template version.
- Orders from reminded carts against the held-back group.
- Blocks and opt-outs. If they rise, you’re sending too early or too often.
Before you switch it on
- A WhatsApp opt-in checkbox on the order form that names your brand, not pre-ticked
- An approved marketing template with the product, a hold time and two buttons
- Reminders cancelled when the order comes in
- One reminder at 30 to 60 minutes, at most one follow-up a day later
- No retries within 24 hours of a held-back send
- Questions routed to a shared inbox, not one person’s phone
- A held-back group of carts, so you can work out cost per recovered order
Common questions
How much does a WhatsApp abandoned cart message cost in India?
Meta classes cart reminders as marketing, even when the shopper asked for them. Each one delivered to an Indian number costs ₹0.8631 before GST, on Meta's India rate card effective 1 July 2026 and unchanged on 1 October. A reminder that isn't delivered costs nothing.
When should I send an abandoned cart reminder on WhatsApp?
Send one reminder 30 to 60 minutes after the cart is left. The playbook suggests starting at 30 minutes, then testing an hour against it once you have a few weeks of numbers. Whatever the delay, cancel the reminder if the order comes in first.
How many cart reminders should I send on WhatsApp?
Two at most. If the first reminder was read and ignored, send one different follow-up about a day later that answers a common objection such as returns, delivery date or cash on delivery. After two messages with no response, stop. If the first wasn't delivered, don't retry inside 24 hours.
Can I send cart reminders as utility templates to pay less?
No. Meta's template rules name cart reminders as marketing, even if requested by users. Submit one as utility and Meta will approve it as marketing anyway, so each delivered reminder is billed at the marketing rate of ₹0.8631 to an Indian number, before GST.
