Meta's free Business AI or an AI agent on the Platform? An honest comparison for small teams

Since May 2026, Indian small businesses can switch on Meta's own AI in the WhatsApp Business app. For a lot of them that's the right answer. For a team, it usually isn't.

The short version

  • Meta's Business AI, launched in the WhatsApp Business app for Indian small businesses on 14 May 2026, answers questions, captures leads and books appointments, and the owner can take over any chat.
  • It lives inside the Business app, so it inherits the app's limits: one phone plus linked devices, and no routing to a team.
  • An AI agent on the Business Platform hands chats to a person or team with a summary. Its replies are service messages, charged at ₹0.115 each in India after 1,000 per number per month.
  • If one or two people handle every chat and your questions are about your catalogue, start with Meta's option.

Anjali Deshmukh bakes celebration cakes from a home kitchen in Pune and takes every order on the WhatsApp Business app. In June a new option appeared under the Tools tab: “Your Business AI”. She set it up from her catalogue and a price list in about twenty minutes. Now it answers “do you do eggless?” at midnight and she wakes up to orders instead of questions.

She doesn’t need anything else. Plenty of businesses reading this don’t either, and it’s worth saying so before comparing anything.

What Meta’s Business AI does

Meta launched Business AI in the WhatsApp Business app for Indian small businesses on 14 May 2026. In Meta’s words, it can “respond to customer queries 24/7, capture leads, book appointments, and drive sales”. You set it up from the app’s Tools tab, and it answers from the information you give it, including your product catalogue and documents.

Three details from Meta’s announcement matter for Indian businesses:

  • Meta says it’s available “in all native Indian languages”.
  • The owner can take over any conversation from the AI.
  • UPI payments inside the chat are “starting soon”, with no date given.

Two caveats. Meta says businesses “must meet certain criteria to be eligible”, and it rolled out over weeks, so not everyone has it yet. And Meta’s India announcement doesn’t state a price. Separately, Meta’s wider Meta Business Agent, announced on 3 June 2026 for the Business app, Messenger and Instagram, is free to start, with “paid subscription offerings” promised “in the coming months”. Meta’s new Meta One business subscriptions, announced in September 2026, include enhanced Business Agent access in every business tier. Expect the free version to stay useful and the better version to cost something.

When Meta’s option is enough

Start with Meta’s AI if most of these are true:

  • One or two people reply to every chat, on the business phone.
  • Customers mostly ask about products, prices, timings and availability.
  • The owner is happy to be the person the AI hands over to.
  • Customers save your number, and you don’t need to message people who haven’t written to you first.

Meta hasn’t announced a price for it in India, it sits in an app you already use, and it’s built by the company that makes WhatsApp. For a home bakery, a salon with two chairs or a tailor, that’s a strong offer. Our app vs Platform guide has the wider case for staying on the app.

Where it runs out

Business AI lives inside the Business app, so it carries the app’s limits with it.

The first is who it hands over to. The free app runs on one phone plus up to four linked devices, and Meta’s paid tiers raise that to ten. When the AI can’t answer, the chat goes back to whoever is holding that phone. There’s no “send wedding orders to Priya and bulk orders to Arjun”, and no note telling the person what the customer already asked.

The second is what sits around the chat. A growing team wants to know who answered, whether an enquiry was ever closed, and what this customer ordered last month. The app wasn’t built to keep that record for twelve people.

The third is what the AI can read. You feed Business AI through the app. If the answers your customers need already live on your website, in delivery-area pages and return policies, you’ll be copying them across by hand and keeping two versions in step.

None of this makes Meta’s AI worse at answering questions. It makes it a tool for a business run from one phone.

What an AI agent on the Platform adds

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, the AI agent comes from your provider rather than from Meta, and it works inside the provider’s shared inbox. The practical differences:

Business AI in the appAI agent on the Platform
Where it runsWhatsApp Business appYour provider’s software, on a Platform number
When it can’t answerOwner takes over on the phoneHands the chat to a named person or team
What it learns fromWhat you enter in the app, including catalogue and documentsDepends on the provider; often documents and website pages
Team around itApp’s device limitAs many seats as your plan has
Meta’s chargesNone stated for the appEach reply is a service message, charged after 1,000 per number per month

The last row deserves a closer look, because it’s the cost most comparisons leave out.

What a Platform agent costs you

Since 1 October 2026, every reply a business sends inside the 24-hour window is a service message. Meta gives 1,000 free per business phone number per month, then charges ₹0.115 each for Indian numbers, before GST. An AI agent’s replies count exactly like a person’s.

Take a store whose agent handles 3,000 chats a month at three replies each: 9,000 replies. That’s (9,000 − 1,000) × ₹0.115 = ₹920 a month to Meta, before GST, on top of what the provider charges. It’s modest. It doubles if the agent sends six short messages where three would do, so check how chatty an agent is before switching it on.

If a provider uses Meta’s own Business Agent through the Platform, there’s a token charge too. Meta has billed that at $2 per million tokens since 1 August 2026, and says a typical message uses 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, which is roughly 4 to 5 US cents a message. Ask any provider which model answers your customers and how that’s billed.

Questions to settle before choosing

Whichever you pick, test it with real questions from your own chat history, not the ones in the demo. Take thirty messages from last month, including the badly spelled ones and the ones in Hinglish, and see what comes back.

Then ask:

  1. When it can’t answer, who gets the chat, and do they see what was already said?
  2. When your prices change, where do you update them, and how long until the AI knows?
  3. Can you switch it off in one step on a bad day?
  4. Who pays per message, and how many messages does a typical answer take?

If Meta’s AI answers well and the chat lands on the right phone, stay with it. If the chat lands on the wrong person, or on nobody, that’s your sign to move.

One thing we don’t know yet

We haven’t found anything from Meta on whether Business AI keeps answering on a number that is also connected to the Platform through coexistence, where the app and a provider share one number. If you’re planning that setup, test it on your own number before you rely on either AI, and make sure only one of them is answering at a time. A customer who gets two different answers to “is the chocolate truffle eggless?” won’t trust either, and you pay Meta for the Platform agent’s half of the argument.
