WhatsApp Channels and Status for business: free reach inside WhatsApp, and where it stops
Channels and Status are the two free ways to reach many people inside WhatsApp without the Business Platform. Here is what WhatsApp's help centre says each one does, who actually receives it, and the one step that turns a follower into someone you can message.
The short version
- A WhatsApp channel is a one-way public broadcast to an unlimited audience. Followers can't reply or message the admins, and they don't see your profile name, picture or phone number.
- A status update goes to your contacts for 24 hours, and WhatsApp's privacy guide says Status reaches mutual contacts. Replies to a status arrive in a private chat, which a channel never gives you.
- Channel insights show accounts reached, top regions and follows for the last 30 days, but WhatsApp calls them 'in development' and doesn't show them under 100 followers.
- Posting to a channel or a status costs nothing. The chats that follow are where Meta's rates apply: 1,000 free service replies per number a month, then ₹0.115 each, and ₹0.8631 for a marketing template.
- A follower becomes a contact only when they message your number. Put a wa.me link with pre-filled text in the update, and ask for opt-in in the chat that follows.
Vivek Chandran runs a cycle and fitness-equipment shop in Coimbatore with five staff (an invented example). Every morning at nine he posts the day’s arrivals as a status from the shop’s WhatsApp Business app, and a few hundred regulars see it. A customer asked why the shop didn’t have a channel like the local newspaper does. Vivek wanted to know whether a channel was worth the bother, and whether it could replace the broadcast lists he sends on Fridays.
A WhatsApp channel for business and a status update are the two ways to reach many people inside WhatsApp without paying per message. They are also the two that give you the least back: no replies, no numbers, no list. Here is what WhatsApp’s help centre says each one does, where each stops, and the one step that turns a follower into a contact you can actually message.
What is a WhatsApp channel for business?
A channel is a one-way public broadcast inside WhatsApp. The help centre describes channel updates as “a one-way broadcast rather than a conversation”, sent to “an unlimited audience”. Followers can’t reply to an update or message the admins. They can react with an emoji or vote in a poll, and that is the whole of the feedback you get.
Updates live in the Updates tab, away from chats and calls. You can post text, images, videos, stickers, links, audio and polls. Followers don’t see your profile name, picture or phone number; they see the channel. Notifications for a channel are muted by default, so a follower sees your update when they open the tab, not when you post it.
Three things from the admin safety page matter before you start. All channels are public, and WhatsApp says “it’s not possible to create a private channel”. Anyone, follower or not, can read the last 30 days of updates. And the owner and every admin can see each other’s phone numbers, which the owner’s invitation shares, so pick admins you would give your number to anyway. (Terms such as channel, broadcast list and template are defined in our glossary.)
One more line to read before planning around channels. The Business app page says WhatsApp Channels “has begun rolling out but isn’t available to everyone yet”, and that “some features, like being able to create a channel, might not be available to you yet”. If you don’t see the option, that is why.
How to create a WhatsApp channel for business
From WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app, open Channels in the Updates tab, open the menu and choose Create channel, then Continue. Give it a name, add an optional description and icon, and tap Create channel. You can invite contacts in the next step or skip it, and you can add up to 16 more admins who can post, edit updates and see the metrics.
Name the channel as your shop is known, not as a campaign. WhatsApp’s guidelines ask for a title that “reflects the Channel content” so people can choose what to follow, and the same guidelines tell admins to avoid “too many or low-quality updates”.
Two statements about verification sit side by side in the help centre. The general create-a-channel page says channel verification “isn’t publicly available yet”. The Business app page on verified channels, read live on 15 October 2026, says that once you have subscribed to Meta Verified or Meta One and your business has been verified, you can create a verified channel or add the badge to an existing one, up to 10 channels per subscription depending on the plan. The verified business name becomes the prefix of the channel name and the channel picture is set to match. The same page says a badge “does not guarantee your channel will appear in search results”. Our guide to badges covers the subscriptions themselves.
How people find a channel, and why most never will
WhatsApp lists three routes: a link you share outside WhatsApp, in-app sharing by followers, and the directory people browse or search. The directory is sorted by category and filtered by the viewer’s country and language. Requests to be added to the Explore or Recommendations sections “are not accepted”. Recommendations depend on things like follower count, reactions and how often you post, and WhatsApp’s own advice for getting recommended is to grow followers through your external link and post often. Some channels appear labelled “Ad” because the admin paid to promote them; our report on ads in Status and Channels covers what WhatsApp says about that.
So for a shop in Coimbatore the directory is not the plan. The link is. Your channel has a link and a QR code that you can put on the bill, the counter and your own status. Followers can forward an update to up to five chats, and a forwarded update carries a “Forwarded” label that links back to your channel.
What the channel tells you about followers
Less than you’d hope. Channel insights show accounts reached, top regions, follows and unfollows for the last 30 days, and the total follower count. WhatsApp marks insights as “in development”, says reported numbers “may be delayed by about a week”, and doesn’t show them at all for channels with fewer than 100 followers. A region appears in top regions only once you reach more than 100 accounts there.
Each update shows its view count, reactions and poll votes. The follower list shows profile names and, depending on each person’s settings, their photo. The only phone numbers you see belong to followers who are already in your phone’s contacts, and the help centre notes that messaging one of them from the list opens a private chat “from your WhatsApp profile, not your channel”.
That is the trade. A channel can reach people who never gave you their number, and in return it never gives you their number.
WhatsApp Status for business
A status is a photo, video or text that disappears after 24 hours. By default it goes to all your contacts, and you can narrow it to “My contacts except” or “Only share with”. WhatsApp’s privacy guide for Status and Channels describes status updates as shared with “mutual contacts”, so count on it reaching people who have saved your number and whom you have saved too. That is Vivek’s few hundred: regulars who message the shop and are in its phone.
Unlike a channel, a status can start a conversation. Replies and reactions “are sent to your shared chat and labeled as Status”, so a “how much is the gel saddle?” lands as a normal chat you can answer. You can see who viewed and liked a status unless read receipts are off on either side. The Business app adds a trade feature: from Tools, then Catalog, you can tap Share and Add to status to post a link to the whole catalog or to one item.
Two small rules from the status pages. HD media isn’t supported for statuses, so a product photo may look softer than the original. And people or groups you mention can reshare your status to their own audience, without your name or number being revealed.
Channel vs broadcast vs status vs campaign
| Who receives it | Can they reply to you? | Do you get their number? | What it costs to send | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Channel | Anyone who follows, no limit, plus anyone who opens the channel | No, only reactions and poll votes | No, unless they are already a contact | Nothing |
| Status | Your contacts, in practice mutual contacts, for 24 hours | Yes, in a private chat | You already have it | Nothing |
| Broadcast list (app) | Up to 256 contacts per list who have saved your number | Yes, privately | You already have it | Nothing, with a cap of 35 a month where WhatsApp’s limit applies |
| Campaign (Platform) | Contacts who opted in, saved number or not | Yes, into your inbox | Yes, they opted in with it | ₹0.8631 per delivered marketing template before GST |
The broadcast and campaign rows are covered in our guides to the 35-a-month broadcast limit and to broadcast vs group vs campaign. The channel vs broadcast question usually comes from someone who has hit the saved-number rule or the monthly cap. A channel removes both, and it also removes the reply, which for a shop was the point of the broadcast.
What a channel can’t do
- No one-to-one replies. A follower who wants to buy has to find another way to reach you.
- Followers aren’t contacts. You can’t message them, segment them or move them to another tool.
- No targeting. Every follower sees every update, and so does anyone who opens the channel.
- No private updates. WhatsApp has a subscriptions feature for paid, subscriber-only updates, but its page says it is rolling out “to a select group of channels” and may not be available to you.
- No history control. Anyone can read 30 days of updates, and WhatsApp reviews them against its guidelines.
From follower to contact: the one step that matters
A follower becomes someone you can message only when they message your business number first. The way to make that happen from a channel update is a click-to-chat link with pre-filled text.
The format is https://wa.me/<number>?text=<URL-encoded text>, with the number in international format and no plus sign, zeros, brackets or dashes. For a shop update it looks like this, with a placeholder number:
https://wa.me/15550100?text=Hi%2C%20I%20follow%20your%20channel.%20Please%20send%20the%20Diwali%20price%20list
The reader taps, WhatsApp opens a chat with the sentence already typed, and they send it. Now you have a chat, a 24-hour customer service window, and their number.
Answer the question first. Then ask the opt-in question once: “Can Chandran Cycles send you new-arrival alerts on WhatsApp, about one a week? Reply YES to agree.” Meta’s rule is that the opt-in must clearly say the person agrees to receive messages from your business, by name. India’s DPDP Rules bring consent-notice duties from around May 2027, so record the yes with the date and wording now; the opt-in guide has wordings for each place you collect numbers. The same link-and-text method works on printed material, which our QR code guide covers.
What this costs, as an illustration at Meta’s India rates on the 1 October 2026 card. Say 180 followers tap the link in a month and the shop sends each about three replies. That is 540 service messages, inside the 1,000 free per business number per month, so Meta charges nothing for them; past 1,000, each costs ₹0.115 before GST. If 120 of them say yes and the shop sends one marketing template a fortnight, each send costs 120 × ₹0.8631, about ₹103.57 before GST. The channel post itself costs nothing. The chat it starts is what costs money, and it is also the only part that can become a sale.
Who should bother
Start a channel if you have something to say at least weekly to people who don’t need to answer: new stock, timings, batch openings, price changes. A channel posted to twice a month is an empty shop window, and WhatsApp’s own guidance to admins is to post often and keep it useful.
Keep using status if your customers are regulars who already have you saved. It reaches them, it lets them reply, and it costs nothing but the minute it takes.
Neither replaces an opted-in list. If you need to reach past customers who never saved you, or several people need to answer the replies, that is a campaign on the Platform and a shared inbox, not a channel.
Vivek kept the morning status, started a channel for the Sunday ride announcements, and put the link with pre-filled text at the bottom of every update. Look at your own last ten posts, in whatever form they went out, and ask which of them a customer would have wanted to answer. Those belong in a chat. The rest can go on a channel.
Common questions
How do I create a WhatsApp channel for my business?
In WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app, open Channels in the Updates tab, choose Create channel and Continue, add a name, an optional description and icon, then tap Create channel. Invite contacts, and add up to 16 more admins. WhatsApp's Business app page says channel creation is still rolling out and may not be available to you yet.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp channel and a broadcast list?
A broadcast list sends a private message to up to 256 contacts who have saved your number, and each can reply to you. A channel is public and one-way: anyone can follow, there is no audience limit, followers can't reply, and you don't get their numbers. WhatsApp says some countries now cap broadcasts at 35 free a month.
Can customers reply to a WhatsApp channel?
No. WhatsApp's help centre says followers can't reply directly to updates or send messages to channel admins; they can react with an emoji or vote in a poll. If you want a conversation, put a click-to-chat link in the update so the reader messages your business number, which opens a normal chat with a 24-hour window.
Is WhatsApp Status good for business?
Status suits regular customers who already have your number saved. WhatsApp shows status updates to your contacts, and its privacy guide says Status reaches mutual contacts. Updates disappear after 24 hours, you can see who viewed them, and replies arrive as a private chat labelled Status. The WhatsApp Business app can also share your catalog to Status.
Do WhatsApp channels cost money for a business?
Posting to a channel costs nothing, and so does posting a status. Meta charges only for messages on the WhatsApp Business Platform: from 1 October 2026 each business number gets 1,000 free service replies a month, then ₹0.115 each to Indian numbers, and a marketing template costs ₹0.8631 per delivered message before GST.
