Ads in WhatsApp Status and Channels: what WhatsApp's help centre says, as of 15 October 2026
WhatsApp now carries ads, but only in Status and Channels. Its help centre explains where they show, what information picks them and how a business buys them. It does not name a single country. Here is what the pages say, and what an Indian business should do with it.
The short version
- WhatsApp's help centre says ads appear only in Status and Channels, never in chats, and that they are 'rolling out gradually and may not be available in your region yet'. No page we read names a country.
- Status ads are labelled 'Ad' with the advertiser's name and appear between status updates. Promoted channels appear in the Channels directory with an 'Ad' or 'Sponsored' label.
- WhatsApp says it uses country code, age, device language, general location and Status and Channels activity to pick ads, and that personal messages, calls and status updates are end-to-end encrypted and 'can't be used to show you ads'.
- A business buys Status ads in Meta Ads Manager using the WhatsApp Status placement. The WhatsApp Business app's own Advertise flow creates Facebook and Instagram ads that open a WhatsApp chat.
- Whoever taps the ad lands in a chat with your business. The first reply, the 24-hour window and Meta's per-message rates then apply as for any other chat.
Ads are part of WhatsApp now, in exactly two places. WhatsApp’s help centre, read on 15 October 2026, says that “if you’re only using WhatsApp for personal messaging, you won’t see ads”, that ads “will appear in Status and Channels, separate from your personal chats and calls”, and that they “are rolling out gradually and may not be available in your region yet”. None of the pages we read names a country, India included.
This report sets out what WhatsApp’s own pages say about where the ads show, what picks them, how a business buys them, what viewers can do, and what it means for an Indian business that wants enquiries. Each statement is dated to a Common Crawl capture or to our live read on 15 October 2026; where the two differ, we say so.
Where the ads appear
Two formats, both inside the Updates tab.
The first is an ad in Status. WhatsApp’s page on seeing ads in Status (captured 8 September, unchanged on 15 October) says: “You may see ads while viewing status updates. Ads in Status will be labeled ‘Ad’ and include the name of the advertiser.” WhatsApp’s ads page for businesses, read on 15 October, adds that these ads “appear to people between their organic Status content”.
The second is a promoted channel. The page on how WhatsApp recommends channels (captured 4 September) says: “Some channels may pay to promote their channel. These promoted channels are clearly labeled as ‘Ad’.” The page on hiding ads refers to tapping “the word Sponsored” on a promoted channel, so readers will see both labels. WhatsApp’s privacy guide for Status and Channels explains the effect: a promoted channel “will show up higher in the Channels directory and will be shown to users who may be interested in that type of channel”.
Where the tap goes is what matters to a business. The help page on creating ads in Status (read 15 October) says: “Customers who interact with your ad are sent directly to a chat with your business.” The business-facing ads page lists three destinations: a WhatsApp chat, your website, and “soon” your app.
What information picks the ads
WhatsApp is specific about what it uses and what it doesn’t, on the main ads page (captured 4 September, re-read 15 October). To decide which ads to show, it uses:
- Basic account information, “such as country code and age (where applicable)”.
- Device information, “such as device language”.
- General location, “like city or country”, and not precise location.
- Status and Channels activity: “channels you follow, content you engage with in channels, and ads you’ve clicked on in Channels or Status”.
It says it does not use personal messages, calls or status content, locations shared in chats, device contacts, or “your membership in groups with friends and family”. The encryption line is worth quoting in full: “As always your personal messages, calls, and status updates are end-to-end encrypted and can’t be used to show you ads.”
On what reaches Meta: “We don’t share personal information (like phone number) with Meta, so Meta cannot identify you and is only able to suggest ads that may appeal to people who share broad characteristics such as a general area.” The exception is a person who adds WhatsApp to a Meta Account; then “your ad preferences will apply and information across your accounts will be used for ads”.
One wording change between capture and live page: “Accounts Center” became “Meta Account”, a rename the page explains. The substance is the same.
The Status and Channels Privacy Policy, effective 25 June 2025, adds what WhatsApp collects after an ad is shown: whether you view or tap it, follow a promoted channel, or buy on WhatsApp, and “the number of messages or calls you exchange with the advertiser after interacting with an ad”. It also says advertisers receive “reports on their ad performance, such as whether an ad receives high engagement or negative feedback”.
How a business buys them
Through Meta Ads Manager, according to the one help page that addresses it directly. “How to create ads in Status on the WhatsApp Business app”, read on 15 October 2026, says: “Ads in status on the WhatsApp business app are managed in Meta’s Ads Manager and supported by the Meta Business Help Center.” It continues: “You can create ads in Meta Ads Manager that use the WhatsApp Status placement,” and “With Ads Manager reporting, you can review metrics for your ads, such as impressions, clicks, and messaging conversations started.”
Meta’s Business Help Centre page on ad placements, read the same day, lists “WhatsApp status: your ads will appear in WhatsApp status” under “Stories, status and reels”, alongside Facebook and Instagram Stories and Reels. The top of that page carries a caveat: “Some ad placements are still in development and may not yet be available in certain geographic locations.”
The WhatsApp Business app’s own Advertise flow is a different thing. The Android version of “How to create ads on WhatsApp Business” (captured 8 September, unchanged on 15 October) says you can “create Facebook and Instagram ads that lead to a WhatsApp chat with your business”, with or without a Facebook account, using a photo, catalog item or status as the creative. You set a daily budget, a duration and an audience; approval “typically” takes 24 hours; you can’t schedule ads in advance; only one draft is kept and it is deleted after seven days. That page names no Status placement. The web version, read live, has a step that says “Select where you want to show your ad” without naming the places. The app’s ad metrics page defines Placements as “the platforms that your ad is on, such as Facebook”.
For promoted channels, the help centre is thinner than it was. The page “About becoming a promoted channel in the directory”, as captured on 13 August 2026, included this line: “Go to Meta Ads Manager and set up an account. If ads in status or channels is available they’ll see those in their ad placement options.” That line is gone from the live page, which now says channel subscriptions are rolling out gradually, links to the ads pages, and offers a form to “stay informed on the latest updates on availability in your region”.
What it costs is not on any of these pages. No WhatsApp page we read lists a price for a Status ad or a promoted channel. The app flow sets a daily budget, and the payments page says prepaid funds, cards, PayPal, a bank account and “local manual payment methods in supported countries” can pay for ads. One more detail for anyone who advertises: when you create an ad, “your business profile name is shared with Meta for inclusion in your ad”, and your profile photo too if its privacy setting is Everyone.
Is India covered?
The pages don’t say, in either direction. Here is every statement about geography we found.
| Page | What it says | Read or captured |
|---|---|---|
| About ads in WhatsApp Status and Channels | ”rolling out gradually and may not be available in your region yet” | Captured 4 Sep; same on 15 Oct |
| About showing ads in WhatsApp Status | ”rolling out gradually and might not be available to you yet”, with a link to subscribe for availability updates “in your region” | Read 15 Oct |
| Privacy at a Glance, Status and Channels | ”in some countries, admins will be able to pay to promote their channel” | Read 15 Oct |
| Status and Channels Privacy Policy | ”Ads are coming to Status and Channels in stages, so it may take time for you to begin seeing them” | Effective 25 Jun 2025; read 15 Oct |
| Meta Business Help Centre, ad placements | ”Some ad placements are still in development and may not yet be available in certain geographic locations” | Read 15 Oct |
| Subscriptions for no ads; less-personalised ads; ads in the EU | ”This content is only available to specific regions and may not be applicable to you” | Read 15 Oct from India |
The ads page on business.whatsapp.com opened with a prompt asking “Did we select the right country/region? India”. That is the site detecting where we were, not a statement that the product is on sale here.
The only availability test the help centre has ever offered is the one in the August capture: open Ads Manager and look at the placement options. If WhatsApp Status appears under Stories, status and reels for your ad account, you can buy it. If it doesn’t, you can’t yet.
What the person seeing the ad can do
Quite a lot. From the ad itself a person can tap “Why you’re seeing this ad” (WhatsApp’s example reason: “when an advertiser wants to show their ad to people in the country that matches your phone’s country code”), choose Not interested, hide all ads from that advertiser, or report the ad. Ad preferences, including a 30-day list of ads and advertisers seen, sit in the Updates tab menu and under Settings, Account, “Ad preferences for Status & Channels”. WhatsApp says ads and their preferences “can’t be managed on WhatsApp Web or other platforms” for now. Anyone can request an ads report from Settings, Account, Request account info, ready in about three days.
The help centre has pages on a paid subscription for using Status and Channels without ads, and on choosing less-personalised ads. Opened from India on 15 October 2026, each shows one line: “This content is only available to specific regions and may not be applicable to you.” The page “How we show ads in the European Union” shows the same line. So no ad-free subscription is described for Indian users today.
What this means for an Indian business
The ad is only the front door. Every page about Status ads ends in the same place: a chat with your business. Once the person is in the chat, the rules are the ones you already live by. Their message opens a 24-hour customer service window. Your free-form replies inside it are service messages, 1,000 free per business number per month from 1 October 2026 and ₹0.115 each after that to Indian numbers, before GST. After the window closes, you need a template. Our click-to-WhatsApp ads set-up guide covers the welcome message, the qualifying buttons and the common mistakes, and the glossary defines the terms.
One thing we can’t tell you. Meta’s pricing page describes a free entry point window of up to 7 days for chats that start from “ads that click to WhatsApp” on the WhatsApp phone app, explained in our free window guide. It doesn’t say whether an ad shown inside WhatsApp Status counts as one of those ads, and we haven’t found a Meta page that does. Don’t budget on free follow-ups from Status ads until your own billing shows them.
Status is browsed in spare minutes, often after hours. If an enquiry at 10 pm gets its first reply at 11 the next morning, the 24-hour window is still open but the person has usually moved on. Set an automatic first reply that asks a real question, and give someone the job of answering ad chats on weekends.
The arithmetic, as an illustration at Meta’s India rates. Suppose a Status campaign brings 300 chats in a month and your team sends each person four replies. That is 1,200 service messages: 1,000 free, then 200 × ₹0.115, or ₹23 before GST. If 150 of those people agree to hear from you and you send one marketing template a fortnight, each send costs 150 × ₹0.8631, about ₹129.47 before GST. The ad spend itself is set in Ads Manager and appears on no WhatsApp page. A chat that someone started from an ad is not an opt-in for later offers; ask in the chat and record the answer, as our opt-in guide sets out.
A promoted channel is a different purchase. It buys followers, and followers aren’t contacts: they can’t reply, and you don’t get their numbers. Our guide to Channels and Status for business covers what a channel can and can’t do, and the link that turns a follower into a chat.
If you run Meta ads for an Indian business, do one thing this week: open Ads Manager, start a new ad set, and look under placements for WhatsApp Status. Note what you see and the date. That screen, not this article, is the current answer to whether you can advertise on WhatsApp Status in India.
Common questions
Where do ads appear on WhatsApp?
Only in Status and in Channels, according to WhatsApp's help centre read on 15 October 2026. Status ads appear while you view status updates and carry an 'Ad' label with the advertiser's name; promoted channels appear in the Channels directory. WhatsApp says people who use it only for personal messaging won't see ads, and chats stay end-to-end encrypted.
Are WhatsApp Status ads available in India?
WhatsApp's pages don't say. Every page we read on 15 October 2026 says ads in Status and Channels are 'rolling out gradually and may not be available in your region yet', and none lists countries. The check WhatsApp's help centre suggested in an earlier version of one page is to look for a WhatsApp Status placement in Meta Ads Manager.
How do I advertise on WhatsApp Status?
WhatsApp's help centre says ads in Status are managed in Meta Ads Manager: create an ad there and choose the WhatsApp Status placement, and people who interact with it are sent to a chat with your business. Ads Manager reporting shows impressions, clicks and messaging conversations started. The WhatsApp Business app's own Advertise flow creates Facebook and Instagram ads.
What data does WhatsApp use to target ads in Status?
WhatsApp lists country code and age, device information such as language, general location such as city or country, and Status and Channels activity such as channels followed and ads tapped. It says personal messages, calls, status content, locations shared in chats, device contacts and group memberships are not used, and that it doesn't share your phone number with Meta.
Can I turn off ads on WhatsApp Status?
You can hide an ad, choose 'Not interested', report it, and manage ad preferences from the Updates tab. WhatsApp's pages about a paid subscription for using Status and Channels without ads showed only 'This content is only available to specific regions' when we opened them on 15 October 2026, so no such subscription is described for Indian users today.
