WhatsApp for business by industry in India: who links it, and who runs a platform behind it

Manufacturers and exporters link WhatsApp from more homepages than anyone else and almost never show a platform behind it. Online stores and salons link it less often and run a platform far more often. Our August 2026 scan, industry by industry, with the caveat up front that page titles are a rough guide to trades.

The short version

  • Homepages whose title mentions manufacturing or exporting carry the most WhatsApp signals (2,751), then education (2,698), IT services (2,683), healthcare (1,540), travel (1,293) and real estate (1,133).
  • Platform use is rare everywhere and uneven: 7.3% of e-commerce signal pages and 6.2% of beauty pages show a platform fingerprint, against 0.6% of manufacturing and 0.8% of NGO pages.
  • Vendor fingerprints differ by trade: Zoko and Interakt on e-commerce pages, Salesforce on real estate and IT pages, AiSensy, Engati and Interakt on education pages. A Salesforce or Engati fingerprint isn't proof of WhatsApp.
  • Manufacturing sites use api.whatsapp.com/send links more than three to one over wa.me. Every other group except real estate prefers wa.me.
  • Industry labels come from words in the homepage title, so every figure here is 'homepages whose title mentions', never a share of Indian clinics or schools.

Ask which industries use WhatsApp for business in India and the honest answer is all of them: every clinic, every coaching class, every builder. True, and not much use. We wanted to know which kinds of business put WhatsApp on their websites, which of them run it through a platform rather than a phone, and whether the habits differ by trade. So we counted.

We make Conecxt, one of the WhatsApp platforms in this category.

In August 2026 we scanned 113,102 .in homepages from Common Crawl’s monthly crawl archive for WhatsApp click-to-chat links, the fingerprints of 137 WhatsApp platform vendors and ten website chat widgets. We then sorted the 26,505 pages with any signal into industries by the words in their page title, which is the method’s weak point and the reason every figure below says “homepages whose title mentions”. The full method, the vendor tables and every caveat are in our study of WhatsApp on Indian websites.

Four caveats apply to everything here. We read homepages only, so a clinic that links WhatsApp from its Contact page counts as no link. A platform fingerprint means the vendor’s code or domain is on the page; a business that runs a provider’s inbox behind a plain wa.me link leaves no trace, so platform use is undercounted. Some vendors on Meta’s partner list sell many things, so a Salesforce or Engati fingerprint means “runs that vendor’s code”, not “uses the WhatsApp API through it”. And the counts are of homepages, not companies. Terms such as platform, template and messaging limit are in the WhatsApp Business glossary.

The industry table

Each row is a group of homepages whose title contains the words in brackets. “Pages with signal” is any WhatsApp link, platform fingerprint or chat widget. The platform rate is the platform count divided by the platform count plus the link-only count, so it ignores pages that have only a chat widget.

Manufacturers, exporters and “industries” top the table with 2,751 signal pages, and 2,649 of those are a plain link with nothing behind it. Education is a close second at 2,698, IT services third at 2,683, then healthcare, travel and real estate. Part of this is how easy each trade is to spot: a title like “Brass Fittings Exporters and Manufacturers in Jamnagar” is unmistakable, while a boutique’s title is often just its name, so manufacturing is probably over-counted relative to retail.

The suffix figures point the same way. Across all 113,102 homepages, 21.3% link WhatsApp; among the 15,815 co.in domains, the commercial suffix that trading and wholesale firms favour, the rate is 26.6%.

Which industries run a platform?

Almost none, by the homepage measure, and the few that do cluster in two trades. Homepages whose title reads as an online store show a platform fingerprint on 7.3% of pages with a WhatsApp link or platform. Beauty, spa and wellness pages show 6.2%. Financial services 4.7%, legal 4.1%, restaurants 3.4%, education 3.2%. At the bottom, home services 1.2%, NGOs 0.8%, manufacturing 0.6% and astrology and matrimony 0.0%. E-commerce against manufacturing is 7.3 ÷ 0.6, twelve times the rate.

Two things explain the gap. The first is what a fingerprint is. An online store on Shopify installs its WhatsApp vendor as an app, and the app puts a widget or a script on the storefront, which is what our scan sees. Wati’s Shopify marker alone appears on 4 beauty pages and 1 retail page. A clinic that uses the same vendor through an API integration, with a plain link on its site, is invisible to us. So the e-commerce rate is partly a measure of where vendors leave footprints.

The second is need. A store sends order updates, shipping notices and abandoned-cart reminders to people who messaged yesterday or never, which on the WhatsApp Business Platform means approved templates and a reason to pay a provider. A manufacturer with one person answering enquiries has no such reason until the day that person is on leave, and a wa.me link into a phone does the job until then. The NGO and astrology rows say the same thing from the other side: a trade with no repeat transactional messages has no pull towards a platform.

Vendor fingerprints by industry

Counts are homepages on which the vendor’s domain, script or widget marker appears; a count is all a fingerprint can support. Conecxt leaves no fingerprint on a customer’s website, so it’s absent from this table, as is every other tool that connects through the API alone.

Read the Salesforce and Engati rows with care. Both sell far more than WhatsApp, and on real estate and IT pages their code is more likely a CRM form or a website chatbot than a WhatsApp inbox. The Indian-born WhatsApp tools are the cleaner signal: Zoko and LimeChat lean to store, retail and beauty titles, Gallabox to education, IT services and travel, and Interakt appears in nearly every row, which fits a tool sold across trades rather than one with a niche.

The chat-widget column is a different layer: Tawk.to alone is on 274 education pages and 280 IT services pages, far more than any WhatsApp platform. A widget talks to an anonymous visitor who vanishes when the tab closes, which is why the two layers coexist rather than compete.

Every group uses both of WhatsApp’s main link formats, but not in the same proportion.

Manufacturing is the odd one out: 2,019 api.whatsapp.com/send links against 597 wa.me, more than three to one (2,019 ÷ 597 is about 3.4). Real estate leans the same way, retail is even, and everyone else prefers wa.me, the format WhatsApp’s own help page gives. Both formats open a chat. Most of that gap comes from one hosted website package, whose WhatsApp box uses api.whatsapp.com/send on 1,636 of the manufacturing homepages; without it, manufacturers too prefer wa.me, 597 to 383, and so does real estate. Our manufacturers and exporters article has the split.

The bare-number column matters more. WhatsApp’s click-to-chat rule is a full phone number in international format with no zeroes, brackets or dashes, which for India means 91 and the ten digits. A link carrying only the ten digits doesn’t open the intended chat. Education pages have 259 of these out of 2,161 with a readable number, about 12 in 100 (259 ÷ 2,161); healthcare has 143 out of 1,361. Someone built the link from the number on the visiting card and nobody tested it on a phone.

The last column of the first table, pages listing two or more numbers, has its own piece: two WhatsApp numbers on one website covers what a second number usually is and what it does to the record.

What each industry can take from this

A store or a salon sits in the two rows where a platform is already common; the question is which habits of the shop next door you’ve skipped, such as order and booking updates as templates. A clinic, a travel agent or a builder sits in a row where almost everyone is on a plain link into a phone, so the reminder, the itinerary change and the site-visit follow-up are still typed by hand from whichever handset has the chat. The first clinic in the lane to stop doing that gets the advantage.

Manufacturers and exporters are the hardest case to argue. For a two-person enquiry desk the plain link works. The reasons to move are the ones a homepage can’t show: the salesman who left with the Dubai buyer’s chats, and the quote nobody can find. And since 1 October 2026 Meta charges for replies after the first 1,000 per number per month, so a desk that outgrows a phone has a message volume worth counting.

What we’d check if we were you

Find your row and read its two numbers: how many of your trade link WhatsApp at all, and how many show a platform. At 0.6% the phone still passes for a system, and the first business to put a team behind its number gets a head start. At 7.3% that question is settled, and the only one left is how long to stay the store doing it by hand.

Common questions

Which industries in India use WhatsApp for business the most?

By count of .in homepages carrying a WhatsApp link, platform fingerprint or chat widget in our August 2026 scan: manufacturing and exporters 2,751, education 2,698, IT services 2,683, healthcare 1,540, travel 1,293 and real estate 1,133. The labels come from words in page titles, so they're approximate, and 9,333 pages couldn't be classified.

Which industries use a WhatsApp Business API platform rather than a plain link?

Few in any industry. Among .in homepages with a WhatsApp link or platform fingerprint, the platform share was 7.3% for e-commerce titles, 6.2% for beauty and wellness, 4.7% for financial services and 3.2% for education, falling to 0.6% for manufacturing and exporters. A business running a provider's inbox behind a plain wa.me link leaves no fingerprint, so these are floors.

Do real estate, education and healthcare businesses in India use WhatsApp on their websites?

Yes, mostly as a plain click-to-chat link. In our scan, 1,056 real estate homepages, 2,378 education homepages and 1,448 healthcare homepages carried a WhatsApp link with no platform fingerprint, against 30, 79 and 28 with one. Healthcare pages listed two or more numbers on 91 pages and education on 157.

Which WhatsApp platforms do Indian businesses in each industry use?

Judging by homepage fingerprints only: Zoko (16) and Interakt (15) lead on e-commerce titles, Interakt (7) and Wati (5) on beauty, Gallabox (5) on travel, and AiSensy, Engati and Interakt (12 each) on education. Salesforce leads real estate (13) and IT services (12), but its code is usually a CRM or website chatbot, not proof of WhatsApp.
