Two WhatsApp numbers on one website: what 1,239 Indian homepages say about staff phones
About one in twenty Indian homepages with a WhatsApp link carries more than one number: sales on one, support on another, the owner on a third. Nearly every one of them is a mobile number in somebody's pocket. Here is what our August 2026 scan found, and the structure that replaces the second button.
The short version
- Of 21,759 .in homepages with a readable WhatsApp number, 1,239 (5.7%) list two or more. On .com homepages with an Indian number the share is 7.2%.
- Among the title groups we could classify, education homepages list a second number most often (157 pages), then IT services (103), healthcare (91) and travel (67).
- 99.2% of the Indian numbers we read are 10-digit mobile numbers, so a WhatsApp number on a website is almost always a SIM in a phone, and the chats live on that phone.
- Two numbers split the record in half: no shared history, no handover, and a separate 24-hour window and 1,000-reply allowance on each.
- One business number with a team behind it suits most businesses. Two numbers make sense for two brands, or two locations with different hours.
Hardik Solanki (an invented owner; the footer is real enough) runs a nine-person industrial packaging business in Vadodara. His website carries multiple WhatsApp numbers: a “Sales” button that opens a chat with the number on his sales manager’s phone, a “Support” button that opens one with the dispatch desk’s phone, and his own number on the Contact page, left over from when the business was three people. A customer in Ankleshwar who wants to reorder stretch film and ask why last week’s consignment was short picks one button. From that moment his question lives on one handset and not on the other two.
We found a lot of footers like Hardik’s. In August 2026 we scanned every .in homepage in Common Crawl’s monthly crawl archive, 113,102 of them, and the 8,497,286 .com homepages beside them, for WhatsApp click-to-chat links, the fingerprints of WhatsApp platform vendors and website chat widgets. Every number inside a WhatsApp link was read in full international form and counted per page; the full method, the vendor tables and every caveat are in our study of WhatsApp on Indian websites.
Three caveats matter for this piece. We read homepages only, so a second number on the Contact page doesn’t count, and the real share of businesses with several numbers is higher than ours. Our extractor stops at five numbers per page. And the industry labels below come from words in the page title, so they’re approximate.
How many websites list more than one WhatsApp number?
About one in twenty. Of the 24,059 .in homepages with a WhatsApp link, 21,759 carried a number we could read, and 1,239 of those listed two or more distinct numbers.
| Distinct WhatsApp numbers on the homepage | .in homepages | Share of 21,759 | Indian-numbered .com homepages | Share of 43,025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One | 20,520 | 94.3% | 39,929 | |
| Two | 1,068 | 4.9% | 2,636 | |
| Three | 105 | 298 | ||
| Four | 24 | 68 | ||
| Five or more | 42 | 94 | ||
| Two or more | 1,239 | 5.7% | 3,096 | 7.2% |
The right-hand columns are the 43,025 .com homepages whose WhatsApp number carries India’s country code. A .com site is attributed to a country by that code, not by where the business is registered, so a few of these belong to Indian-run businesses abroad. The share is a little higher there, 7.2%, and the shape is the same: most multi-number pages have exactly two, and a small tail have four or five.
Which kinds of sites do it most?
Among the groups the title classifier could place, homepages whose title mentions education lead, and not by a little.
| Title mentions | Pages with a readable number | Pages listing 2+ numbers |
|---|---|---|
| education (school, college, coaching, institute, course, training) | 2,161 | 157 |
| IT services, agencies, software | 2,196 | 103 |
| healthcare (hospital, clinic, dental, doctor, pharma, lab) | 1,361 | 91 |
| travel (travel, tours, hotel, resort, taxi, visa, tickets) | 1,135 | 67 |
| manufacturing, exporters, industries | 2,564 | 60 |
| retail (jewellers, sarees, textiles, electronics, furniture) | 788 | 45 |
| e-commerce (online store, fashion, apparel) | 697 | 41 |
| real estate (property, builders, flats, plots, realty) | 989 | 38 |
| home services (interiors, packers, repair, solar, CCTV) | 677 | 37 |
| beauty, spa, wellness, skin care | 342 | 30 |
| financial services (loan, insurance, CA, GST, investment) | 445 | 27 |
| events, weddings, photography, studios | 319 | 23 |
| automotive (motors, cars, bikes, garage, showroom) | 315 | 18 |
| restaurants, cafés, catering, sweets, food | 345 | 13 |
| astrology, matrimony | 84 | 9 |
| NGO, trusts, religious | 110 | 8 |
| legal and professional | 131 | 6 |
| unclassified | 7,100 | 466 |
A classifier that reads titles can’t tell a coaching institute from a company that trains software testers, so read the rows as kinds of website rather than industries. Even so, the pattern matches how these businesses are organised. Education lists 157 multi-number pages out of 2,161 with a number, which works out to about 7 in 100 (157 ÷ 2,161). Manufacturing lists 60 out of 2,564, about 2 in 100. A school has an admissions desk, an accounts office and a hostel warden, each with a phone. A factory has one person who answers enquiries.
What the second number usually is
Our scan counted numbers. It didn’t read the label beside each one, so what follows comes from the businesses we talk to and from pages we opened while checking the classifier, not from the counts. Four patterns cover most of what we saw.
Sales and support. The commonest split: one number for new enquiries, one for “where is my order”. The customer doesn’t know which desk owns their question, so a fair share of messages land on the wrong number and get forwarded as screenshots.
A second branch. The Vadodara number and the Surat number. Reasonable when the two run separately, a problem the day head office needs to see both.
The owner’s own number. It went on the site in year one and nobody has taken it off. Long-standing customers still use it, so the owner answers at 10 pm the price question the sales desk could have answered at 10 am.
A language or shift split. “Hindi” and “English” buttons, or a day number and a night number on a hotel’s page.
None of these is wrong by itself. The trouble is what the split does to the record.
What happens to chats on two numbers
Each WhatsApp number is its own account with its own history. When the Ankleshwar customer asks “Sales” about the short consignment, the dispatch desk can’t see that thread, and when he asks “Support” about next month’s rate, sales can’t see that one. The only handover between the two is a forwarded screenshot, and nothing on either phone tells Hardik that a question has sat unanswered since Tuesday.
The second effect is quieter. Our scan read 22,797 Indian numbers from WhatsApp links on .in homepages, and 22,604 of them, 99.2%, have the 10-digit mobile shape. A mobile number is a SIM in a handset. The scan can’t tell whether the company bought that SIM or the sales manager did, but either way the chats sit on the handset and on whatever devices are linked to it. When the sales manager resigns, the number printed on the website goes with him, in his pocket, to his next job. Customers stuck in staff phones is about that day, so we won’t repeat it here.
Two numbers also double the rules you have to watch. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, a customer’s message opens a 24-hour window on that number alone; the same customer writing to your other number has opened nothing there. And from 1 October 2026 Meta charges for service replies after the first 1,000 per business phone number per month, at ₹0.115 per delivered message to an Indian number before GST. Two numbers get two allowances, which some owners count as a reason to split. They also get two inboxes to watch, two windows to track for the same customer, and two buttons for the customer to choose between, which they’ll sometimes get wrong.
The structure that works for most businesses
One number for the business, and a team behind it. The number goes on the WhatsApp Business Platform, which you reach through a provider, and everyone who serves customers replies from a shared inbox in a browser. Sales, dispatch and accounts each exist as a team inside that inbox, and a chat reaches the right team through a button the customer taps, a keyword in the first message, or whoever picks it up first. The customer sees one number. The owner sees every chat, who owns it, and which ones are waiting.
Hardik’s footer becomes one button. A new enquiry taps “Price list” and lands with sales. “My order” lands with dispatch. The thread with the Ankleshwar customer shows both questions, the short consignment and next month’s rate, one above the other, with a note from dispatch that sales can read before quoting.
What you give up is the free app. The WhatsApp Business app with linked devices stops at four devices plus the phone, and Meta’s paid multi-agent option at ten, as WhatsApp for multiple users sets out. Past that, or as soon as you want chats owned by named people, the Platform is the route, and the shared inbox setup playbook shows the teams, assignment rules and views a twelve-person studio used. Terms such as template, window and messaging limit are in the WhatsApp Business glossary.
When two numbers are right
Two brands. A firm that sells school uniforms under one name and corporate workwear under another wants two display names, two profiles and two sets of customers who never see each other. Two numbers, both in the same inbox, so the office still works from one screen.
Two locations with different hours. A hotel in Mysuru and a sister hotel in Coorg, each with its own front desk and its own night shift. Guests should reach the desk where they’re staying, and the Coorg desk shouldn’t see Mysuru’s check-in questions at 11 pm.
A number that has to stay in the app. If the owner’s old number carries five years of chats and groups that matter, moving it to the Platform the ordinary way means deleting the app account and the chats with it. Meta’s coexistence option keeps the number in the app and connects it to the Platform as well, with conditions of its own, and not every provider offers it yet. Some businesses keep the old number in the app for its old customers and put a new number on the Platform for everything new. That’s a transition, not a design: set a date to retire the old one. WhatsApp Business API phone number options walks through what each choice of number costs you.
What doesn’t justify a second number is a department. Departments are what teams in an inbox are for. Nor does a second allowance of 1,000 replies: at ₹0.115 a reply, an extra 1,000 is ₹115 a month, which is less than the first mis-routed order costs you.
Before you add a second button
Open your own homepage on a phone and count the WhatsApp numbers on it, then do the same for the Contact page. For each number, write down whose phone it rings, what happens to that phone at 7 pm, and what happens to it on the day that person leaves. If any answer is “I’d have to ask”, that number is a staff phone with a website link on it, and the fix is one number with a team behind it, not a third button.
Common questions
How many Indian business websites list more than one WhatsApp number?
In our August 2026 scan of 113,102 .in homepages, 21,759 carried a WhatsApp link with a readable number and 1,239 of them (5.7%) listed two or more distinct numbers. Among .com homepages with an Indian WhatsApp number, 3,096 of 43,025 (7.2%) did. The scan read homepages only.
Should a business have one WhatsApp number or several?
One number for the business, with a team replying from a shared inbox, suits most small and mid-sized businesses: one history per customer, one place to see what is unanswered, and nothing that leaves with a staff member. A second number is worth it for a separate brand, or a second city with its own hours.
Is the WhatsApp number on an Indian business website usually a mobile number?
Almost always. Of the 22,797 Indian numbers our scan read from WhatsApp links on .in homepages, 22,604 (99.2%) have the 10-digit mobile shape. A mobile number is a SIM in a handset, so the chat history sits on that handset and on whatever is linked to it, not in a record the business holds.
Does each WhatsApp Business number get its own 1,000-reply allowance?
Yes. From 1 October 2026 Meta charges for service replies after the first 1,000 per business phone number per month, at ₹0.115 per delivered message to an Indian number before GST. Two numbers get two allowances, but each also has its own 24-hour window with every customer and its own inbox to watch.
