WhatsApp referral programme for a small business: share link, reward template, what not to do
Word of mouth already happens on WhatsApp; the forward is the most common message in India. A referral programme just gives the forward a link, the link a code, and the code a reward, without the business ever touching a stranger's phone number.
The short version
- Build the programme so the friend messages you. A wa.me link with the referrer's code pre-filled means the friend's own first message opens the chat, and you never collect a number from someone else.
- Meta's Business Messaging Policy, updated 23 September 2026, says you may only contact people who gave you their number and opted in. Asking customers for friends' numbers, adding people to groups or bulk-messaging a list all fall outside it, and enforcement runs from warnings to blocks of 1 to 30 days to a permanent ban.
- Deliver the reward with a coupon code template: a marketing template with one copy-code button and a code of up to 20 characters, sent to the referrer after the friend's first order, at ₹0.8631 per delivered message in India before GST.
- Meta charges are the small part. On a worked example of 1,000 invitations and 60 completed referrals the messages cost about ₹915 before GST; the discounts themselves cost ₹15,000.
- Track by code, not by claims: the code in the friend's first message is the record. Tag the referrer, segment the referred, and expect codes to overcount a little, because some friends would have come anyway.
Benny D’Souza runs a two-wheeler service garage in Mangaluru with eight mechanics and about 1,400 customers on the books from three years of job cards (an invented garage, for the examples here). His best customers arrived the same way: someone’s cousin said “go to Benny, he doesn’t invent faults”. He wants more of that, and he wants to say thank you for it, without paying for ads in a monsoon month when nobody rides.
A WhatsApp referral programme is that cousin’s recommendation with a link attached. The customer forwards a message, the friend taps it, and the friend’s own message starts the chat. Done this way, the business never collects a stranger’s number, which is what keeps the whole thing inside Meta’s rules and India’s incoming data-protection rules.
The programme in one link
The share link is a click-to-chat link to your number with the referrer’s code in the pre-filled text. Everything else hangs off it.
WhatsApp’s click-to-chat page gives the format: https://wa.me/ plus the number in international format, then ?text= and a URL-encoded message. With <number> standing for the garage’s WhatsApp Business number, a customer called Lavina gets:
https://wa.me/<number>?text=Hi%20Benny%27s%20Bike%20Care%2C%20Lavina%20sent%20me.%20Code%20LAV-2219
Her friend taps it and sees “Hi Benny’s Bike Care, Lavina sent me. Code LAV-2219” in the text box, and sends it. Three things follow from that one message. The friend has given you their number by writing to you, and opened a 24-hour window in which you can reply with anything. The code tells you who to thank. And Lavina never typed her friend’s number into anything.
The referrer’s own code should be short and readable: a name fragment and four digits does it, and keeping it under 20 characters matters later for the coupon button. One code per customer, generated once and stored on their contact.
Why the friend has to come to you
Because Meta’s policy allows you to message only people who gave you their number and opted in, and a number handed over by a friend is neither.
A “give us three friends’ numbers and get ₹300 off” form breaks both halves. The friend didn’t give you the number, and hasn’t opted in to anything. Meta’s enforcement page, updated 21 May 2026, describes what repeated violations look like: a warning first, then blocks on template messages of 1 or 3 days, blocks on all messages of 5, 7 or 30 days, an account lock removable only by appeal, and finally being “permanently disabled from the WhatsApp Business Platform”.
The share link turns the problem inside out. The friend’s first message is the friend giving you their number. It is not yet an opt-in for offers; Meta’s opt-in page requires a clear statement that the person agrees to receive messages from your named business, so you ask for that inside the chat, as the thread below shows, and keep the answer. The opt-in guide has the wording and what to record.
The same design is what India’s data-protection rules will want. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 were notified in November 2025; the consent-notice rules apply from around May 2027 and aren’t in force for most businesses yet. A programme in which every person’s data comes from that person, with a dated record of what they agreed to, is the one you won’t have to rebuild. This is general information, not legal advice.
The refer-a-friend WhatsApp message
A short marketing template to opted-in customers, with the reward in one line and their share link in the body.
Benny’s invitation, as a template with the referrer’s name, link and code as parameters:
Hi `{{1}}`, thanks for servicing with Benny's Bike Care this year.
Know someone whose bike needs looking after? Forward them this link:
`{{2}}`
When they bring the bike in for a first service, they get a free wash
and you get Rs 150 off your next service. Your code is `{{3}}`.
Reply STOP to opt out of offers.
This is a marketing template, whatever you call it, because it promotes a service and offers a discount. It goes only to customers who opted in to offers, at ₹0.8631 per delivered message to an Indian number before GST, and it counts toward the per-user marketing cap. Send it once, after a service when the customer is happiest, not as a monthly blast. Our template examples have the approval pitfalls, and the parameter placeholders above are shown in code so they don’t break the page; in WhatsApp Manager they are plain.
A sharper version sends the invitation inside the window, as a service message, on the day the bike goes back. The customer has just messaged “ready?” and you’ve just replied “yes”; the invitation that follows is free within the 1,000-a-month allowance and arrives while the goodwill is fresh.
The broadcast side is free and needs no numbers at all. A Status update with the programme’s details disappears after 24 hours, WhatsApp’s help page says, and is seen by contacts who have saved you; a WhatsApp Channel update reaches followers who never gave you a number. Both can carry a general share link with no referrer code (?text=Hi%20Benny%27s%20Bike%20Care%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20status), which brings new customers but can’t pay a referrer. Our guide to Channels and Status for business covers both.
What the friend sees
A chat they started, answered quickly, with a plain opt-in question at the end.
- Prakash Shenoy: Hi Benny's Bike Care, Lavina sent me. Code LAV-2219 10:40 am
- Benny's Bike Care: Hi Prakash, welcome. Lavina's friends get a free wash with the first service. Which bike is it, and when would you like to bring it in? Mornings are quieter. 10:41 am
- Tomorrow morning
- This weekend
- Ask a question
- Prakash Shenoy: This weekend 10:44 am
- Benny's Bike Care: Saturday 9:30 am is open. The garage is behind the Kadri petrol pump; pin to follow. Can Benny's Bike Care send you service reminders and offers on WhatsApp? Reply STOP any time. 10:45 am
- Yes
- Reminders only
- No
- Prakash Shenoy: Reminders only 10:46 am
- Tagged: referred by LAV-2219 · reminders only · 15 Oct 2026
The buttons are reply buttons, free-form messages a Platform number can send inside the window. The separate choice of “reminders only” is deliberate: Meta’s opt-in page suggests “obtaining separate opt-in by specific message category”, and a customer who can say yes to reminders and no to offers is less likely to block you later.
The reward: a coupon code template
After the friend’s first service, the referrer gets a coupon code template: a marketing template with one button that copies the code.
Meta’s page, updated 28 May 2026, describes the format as a marketing template “that display[s] a single copy code button. When the app user taps the button, WhatsApp copies the coupon code to the clipboard.” The parts are a text header of up to 60 characters, a body of up to 1,024 with parameters if you want the code in the text, an optional quick-reply button of up to 25 alphanumeric characters, and the copy-code button. The code itself is supplied when the message is sent, up to 20 characters, so one approved template serves every referrer. Three limits from the page: the button text can’t be changed, there is one copy-code button per template, and the format is “currently not supported by the WhatsApp web client”. Our template formats guide has the carousel and limited-time-offer formats alongside it.
- Saturday, after Prakash's first service
- Benny's Bike Care: Template · marketing · coupon code Thank you, Lavina. Prakash brought his Activa in on your word. Here's Rs 150 off your next service, valid till 31 December. Tap to copy the code at the counter. 12:10 pm
- Copy code: LAV150
- Stop offers
- Lavina Pinto: Super, will use it next month 12:30 pm
The reward message needs Lavina’s opt-in for offers, which you asked for when she first serviced with you, or when she joined the programme. If a referrer opted in to reminders only, the reward is still promotional; tell her about it at the counter and keep the template for those who said yes to offers.
What it costs at Meta’s rates
The messages cost hundreds of rupees. The rewards cost thousands. Budget for the second.
A worked example for one month, with every count chosen to show the arithmetic rather than to predict anything. Rates are Meta’s India rate card effective 1 October 2026, per delivered message, before GST.
| Step | Count | Message type | Meta charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invitation to opted-in customers | 1,000 | Marketing template | 1,000 × ₹0.8631 = ₹863.10 |
| Friends who message in, two replies each | 120 | Service, inside the window | 240 messages, within the 1,000 free per number per month: ₹0 |
| Reward to referrers after a first service | 60 | Marketing coupon template | 60 × ₹0.8631 = ₹51.79 |
| Meta total | about ₹915 | ||
| Discounts given: 60 washes at ₹100 and 60 × ₹150 off | ₹15,000 |
If the garage’s number has already used its free service allowance on ordinary chats, the 240 replies add 240 × ₹0.115 = ₹27.60. Either way the Meta side is a rounding error next to the reward, which is why the reward, not the message plan, is the decision. Benny’s rule is a reward he’d be glad to give to every single customer, because on a good month he will.
Whether the ₹15,000 was worth it is a question of margin on 60 new customers and how many stay, and our marketing return guide explains why the honest answer needs a held-back group, not a benchmark.
Tracking by referral code
The code in the friend’s first message is the record. Everything else is bookkeeping.
When the friend’s message arrives with “Code LAV-2219”, the referral is attributed at the moment it happens, before anyone has to remember anything. Tag the friend’s contact as referred, with the code, and add a count to Lavina’s contact. Pay the reward on the friend’s first paid job card, not on the message, or you will be paying for cousins who never came.
Two honest caveats. Codes overcount: some friends would have found Benny anyway and used the code because it was there. And a few friends delete the pre-filled line and type “hi”, so a mechanic should ask “who sent you?” at the counter and add the code by hand. Our marketing return guide covers the overcount and what to do about it.
Three shortcuts that end the programme
Each one looks like a faster way to the same result. Each one is how numbers get banned.
Asking customers for their friends’ numbers. Covered above: the friend neither gave you the number nor opted in, so the first template to them breaks the policy’s opening condition. It also hands you personal data you have no consent for, which is exactly what the DPDP Rules are about.
Adding referred people to a WhatsApp group. The person who added them knows them; you don’t, and everyone in the group now sees everyone else’s number. Our comparison of broadcasts, groups and campaigns covers why groups don’t scale for a business, and Meta’s Groups API isn’t something Conecxt offers.
Sending the invitation to the whole contact list with a bulk tool. WhatsApp’s help page on automated and bulk messaging says its products “are not intended for bulk or automated messaging, both of which have always been a violation of our Terms of Service”, and that WhatsApp takes legal action as well as banning accounts. The same page adds a line worth keeping: “receiving many messages at once will not result in an account ban”. Lots of friends messaging you is fine. Lots of messages leaving you to people who didn’t ask is not. The sanctioned route is approved templates to opted-in people through the Platform, which our bulk messaging guide walks through.
Word of mouth marketing on WhatsApp in India
It works because the forward is already the habit; the programme only adds a code to it.
Benny’s customers were forwarding his number before he did anything. The programme changed two things: the forward now carries a link that opens a chat with the right sentence in it, and the garage knows whom to thank. Both need the discipline above: the friend comes to you, the opt-in is asked, the reward goes by a template to someone who agreed to receive it, and the code is the record. Terms used here, from customer service window to coupon code template, are in our glossary.
Start with twenty of your happiest customers and one month. If the codes come back, widen it. If they don’t, the message is wrong or the reward is, and both are cheaper to fix than an ad.
Common questions
How does a WhatsApp referral program work for a small business?
An existing customer gets a share link: a wa.me link to your number with a pre-filled message carrying their referral code. They forward it to a friend. The friend taps it and sends the message, which opens a chat you can answer. After the friend's first order, the referrer receives a reward by a coupon code template.
Can I ask customers for their friends' phone numbers on WhatsApp?
Don't. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy says you may only contact people who have given you their number and opted in to messages from you. A number passed on by a friend is neither. Build the programme so the friend messages you first through a share link, and ask for the opt-in inside that chat.
What is a refer a friend WhatsApp message?
It is a short template sent to opted-in customers that explains the reward and includes their personal share link, with the referral code already in the link's pre-filled text. It is a marketing template, so it goes only to people who agreed to receive offers and costs ₹0.8631 per delivered message in India before GST.
How do I send a referral reward on WhatsApp?
With a coupon code template, a marketing template Meta documents with a text header, a body, an optional quick-reply button and one copy-code button. The code is set when you send, up to 20 characters, so one approved template serves every referrer. Meta notes the format is not supported on the WhatsApp web client.
How do I track a WhatsApp referral code?
The code travels in the friend's first message, because the share link pre-fills it. Read that message, tag the referrer's contact with a successful referral and the friend's contact as referred, and pay the reward only after the friend's first order. Codes overcount slightly, since some friends would have come without one.
