WhatsApp coexistence in India: the Business app and the API on the same number

Meta lets one number run on the WhatsApp Business app and the Business Platform at once. Indian numbers have been eligible since May 2025. Whether you can use it depends on your provider, and a few things in the app stop working the day you connect.

The short version

  • WhatsApp coexistence connects a number already on the WhatsApp Business app to the Business Platform, so the app and a provider's software work on the same number.
  • Meta's changelog says numbers with an India dialling code have been supported since 5 May 2025. You can only get it through a provider that has built it.
  • Meta lists one requirement for the business: WhatsApp Business app version 2.24.17 or higher. Its page sets no minimum age or activity period for the number.
  • One-to-one chats from the last six months and your contacts can be synced. Group chats are not, and broadcast lists in the app become read-only.
  • Messages sent from the app stay free. Messages sent through the provider follow Platform pricing, including replies after the first 1,000 per number per month.

Vaidehi Paranjape runs an event décor and tent-house business in Kolhapur with seven staff. The business number has been on the WhatsApp Business app on her own phone since 2019. She wants her two coordinators and the accountant to answer clients from a shared inbox, and she doesn’t want to give up the app. Her florist and light-and-sound crews are in groups on it, and so are years of client chats with venue photos.

WhatsApp coexistence is built for her situation. It connects a number that’s already on the WhatsApp Business app to the WhatsApp Business Platform, so you use the WhatsApp Business app and API together on the same number. Three things to know before the detail: Meta’s changelog says Indian numbers have been supported since 5 May 2025, Meta’s page doesn’t label the feature a beta, and you can only get it through a provider that has built it into its signup.

What is WhatsApp coexistence?

Coexistence is Meta’s way of putting one number on both the WhatsApp Business app and the Platform. Meta’s own name for it is “onboarding WhatsApp Business app users”; its page says the feature is “sometimes referred to as ‘Coexistence’” by partners and support.

After connecting, Meta says the business “can still send messages on a one-to-one basis using the WhatsApp Business app”, the provider’s software can send at volume on the same number, and WhatsApp “keeps messaging history between both apps in sync”.

There are two other routes: delete the app account and register the number on the Platform, which loses the history, or start with a new number. Our 14-day moving plan covers both.

Is WhatsApp coexistence available in India?

Yes. Meta’s changelog entry dated 5 May 2025 reads: solution providers “can now onboard WhatsApp Business app users who have a WhatsApp Business app phone number with an India country dialing code”.

The onboarding page itself, last updated on 26 June 2026, carries no country list. The changelog is where the countries are named:

Changelog dateWhat Meta added
11 February 2025Providers can onboard Business app users through Embedded Signup
5 May 2025Numbers with an India dialling code
23 October 2025Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, the EEA, the EU and the UK
15 April 2026Nigeria and South Africa

Available in India doesn’t mean available from your provider. Each provider has to build the sync and the signup option. Ask in writing.

What you need before you start

Meta’s page lists one requirement for the business: WhatsApp Business app version 2.24.17 or higher. The other requirements are the provider’s: it must be a Meta Solution Partner or Tech Provider and must have enabled this option in its Embedded Signup.

The page sets no minimum age for the number and no period it must have been active. If a provider tells you the number has to be a certain number of days old, ask where that comes from, because it isn’t on Meta’s page as read on 13 October 2026.

Meta’s migration page adds one piece of advice: back up your chats from the app first.

What the signup looks like

Meta’s current signup flow (version 4, page updated 3 September 2026) asks for the phone number first. If the number is already on the Business app and the provider has coexistence enabled, the flow switches to coexistence on its own. Meta says this order is still rolling out, so some businesses see an older screen where they pick the Business app option themselves.

  1. You confirm the account shown: profile picture, name, number, category and website from the app.
  2. You pick a Meta business portfolio or create one.
  3. You scan a QR code from inside the Business app. Meta also sends a WhatsApp message with a link to the code.
  4. You accept the terms and finish.

The app asks whether to share your chat history with the provider. That choice is yours. If you decline, the provider receives no past messages.

On 19 August 2026 Meta added a beta guide for signing in with the WhatsApp Business app account in place of a Facebook account. That page didn’t load for us without a partner login, so we can’t say what it requires.

What syncs and what doesn’t

One-to-one chats and contacts cross over; almost everything else stays in the app. This is Meta’s feature table, in plain words.

In the Business appWhat changes in the app after connectingReaches the provider’s software?
One-to-one chatsEditing and deleting sent messages is supportedYes. Chats from the last 6 months can be synced; new messages are mirrored both ways
ContactsNo changeYes. Contacts with a WhatsApp number can be synced
Group chatsNo changeNo
Disappearing messagesTurned off for all one-to-one chatsNo
View onceDisabled for one-to-one chatsNo
Live locationDisabled for one-to-one chatsNo
Broadcast listsDisabled. No new lists; existing lists become read-onlyNo
Voice and video callsNo changeNo
Catalogue, orders, statusNo changeNo
Greeting and away messages, quick replies, labelsNo changeNo
Business profileNo changeNo
ChannelsNo changeNo

A few details behind the table matter in practice.

The history sync covers messages sent or received within 180 days of the day you connect. Group messages are left out. For photos, videos and documents, Meta sends the provider the files only for media messages from the last 14 days; older media messages arrive without the file. Vaidehi’s venue photos from March stay on her phone. They won’t appear in a shared inbox.

The provider gets one attempt. Meta gives it 24 hours after you connect to pull contacts and history, and each can be requested once. If it misses the window, you have to disconnect and go through signup again. Meta suggests keeping the app open while the sync runs, and says it can take several minutes.

Broadcast lists are the loss most owners notice first. If festival greetings to saved customers are a big part of how you sell, read what the app’s broadcast lists can and can’t do before you connect.

Linked devices are unlinked, and two apps aren’t supported

Every linked device is disconnected when you connect, and you link them again afterwards. Meta’s page says a business can link up to four companion devices, the same limit the app has today.

Two clients are not supported on a connected number: WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS. If the office computer uses the Windows app, plan to move it to WhatsApp Web.

The same gap applies to customers. A message from a customer using one of those two clients reaches your app, but Meta says the provider isn’t notified, so it won’t show in the shared inbox. Check the app.

What Meta charges

Messages sent from the app stay free, and messages sent through the provider follow Platform pricing. Meta’s page puts it in one sentence: messages sent “via the WhatsApp Business app will continue to be free, but messages sent via Cloud API will be subject to Cloud API pricing”.

For Indian numbers, on the rate card effective 1 October 2026 and before GST, that means:

Sent fromWhat it isMeta’s charge
The Business appAny one-to-one messageFree
Provider’s softwareMarketing template₹0.8631 per delivered message
Provider’s softwareUtility template₹0.115 per delivered message
Provider’s softwareReply inside the 24-hour windowFirst 1,000 per number per month free, then ₹0.115 each

So the same reply costs nothing typed on the phone and counts towards the 1,000 when sent from the shared inbox. Don’t build a routine around that. If Vaidehi’s three inbox users send 1,400 replies in a month, the 400 over the free tier cost 400 × ₹0.115 = ₹46.

Two rules about the 24-hour window catch people out:

  • A window opens only when a customer messages you after the number is connected. Someone who wrote an hour before you connected can be answered from the provider’s software only with a template, or from the app as usual.
  • Messages from the app don’t open or extend a window. A reply on the phone at 10 am doesn’t let the inbox send a free-form message the next afternoon.

Templates can be sent only from the provider’s side. Meta’s pricing explainer PDF for this feature says so, though the PDF still uses the conversation-based wording Meta dropped in July 2025. Read it for the principle and take the numbers from the pricing page.

Throughput on a connected number is fixed at 20 messages a second, which is 72,000 an hour.

How to disconnect, and what disconnects you without asking

You disconnect from the app: Settings, then Account, then Business Platform, then Disconnect Account. Meta says the provider can’t deregister a connected number from its side.

Meta’s page describes what the provider is told when you disconnect. It doesn’t describe what stays in the provider’s system afterwards, so ask the provider what happens to the synced history.

Meta also disconnects a number on its own. The reasons it reports to providers:

ReasonWhat happened
Primary inactivityThe main phone was inactive for about 14 days
Companion inactivityA companion device was inactive for about 30 days
Business downgradeThe number was registered on the consumer WhatsApp app
Change numberThe business changed its phone number
Re-registeredThe business registered the app again on a new device
Account disconnectedWhatsApp enforcement, or the business deleted its WhatsApp account

The first row is the one to plan for. A business phone that sits in a drawer for a fortnight takes the shared inbox down with it.

Changing phones is gentler since May 2026. When you register the app on a new device, Meta shows the previously connected Platform products with a ticked box, and if you leave it ticked the connection is restored in the background, typically within a few minutes. While that runs, messages can’t be sent or received through the provider. Other linked devices such as WhatsApp Web are not re-linked for you. If a different provider connects the number during that gap, the automatic reconnect is cancelled.

Who should use coexistence

  • An owner-run business where the owner’s phone is the business, and supplier or crew groups on that phone matter every day.
  • A team that needs the last six months of client chats in the shared inbox on day one.
  • A business that wants to try a shared inbox and templates for a quarter without a point of no return.
  • A team of up to a dozen where the owner still wants to answer some clients personally from the phone.

Who should do a clean move instead

  • Nobody will keep the main phone active. If the number lives on a spare handset, the 14-day rule will catch you.
  • The phone belongs to an employee. Connecting it keeps the business tied to that person’s device. Move the number properly.
  • You rely on the app’s broadcast lists and don’t plan to use templates. You’d lose the lists and gain nothing.
  • You want every reply to go through assignment. With the app still live, anyone holding the phone can answer around the inbox. The reply is mirrored, but nobody was assigned.
  • You want calls handled in the provider’s software. Meta’s table lists voice and video calls as unchanged in the app and not supported on the Platform side of a connected number.

If two or more of these apply, read the app vs API comparison, then follow the moving plan linked above. If the real problem is only that five people need the number, linked devices or Meta’s paid multi-agent option may be enough without the Platform at all.

Five questions to send a provider

  1. Do you support onboarding a WhatsApp Business app number on Meta’s coexistence route, for an Indian number, today?
  2. Do you sync contacts and the six months of chat history, and how soon after signup?
  3. Do messages I send from the app appear in your inbox, with edits and deletions?
  4. What does your software do when Meta disconnects the number for inactivity?
  5. If I disconnect, what happens to the history you synced?

Before you write to anyone, check the Business app version on the phone that holds the number. Below 2.24.17, update it first. Our guide to the WhatsApp Business API in India covers the rest of the setup, and the glossary explains the terms.

Common questions

Is WhatsApp coexistence available in India?

Yes. Meta's changelog entry of 5 May 2025 says solution providers can onboard WhatsApp Business app users whose number has an India country dialling code. It is only available through a provider that has built it into its signup, so ask yours in writing before you plan around it.

Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and API on the same number?

Yes, through the route Meta calls onboarding WhatsApp Business app users, usually known as coexistence. You connect through a provider's Embedded Signup, keep sending one-to-one messages from the app, and the provider's software works on the same number. Meta requires WhatsApp Business app version 2.24.17 or higher.

What does not sync in WhatsApp coexistence?

Group chats are not synced to the provider's software. Broadcast lists are disabled in the app: you can't create new ones and existing ones become read-only. Disappearing messages, view once and live location are turned off in one-to-one chats. Catalogue, labels, quick replies and Channels stay in the app only.

Are messages free in WhatsApp coexistence?

Messages you send from the WhatsApp Business app stay free. Messages sent through the provider's software follow WhatsApp Business Platform pricing: in India, ₹0.8631 per marketing template and ₹0.115 per utility template, and replies are charged at ₹0.115 after the first 1,000 per number each month, before GST.

How do I disconnect WhatsApp coexistence?

In the WhatsApp Business app, open Settings, then Account, then Business Platform, and tap Disconnect Account. Meta also disconnects the number automatically in some cases, including when the main phone is inactive for about 14 days or the number is moved to the consumer WhatsApp app.
